International Film Festivals
International film festivals are held all over the world. These festivals showcase works from their own countries as well as other countries, fostering good will between participants and increasing the world's exposure to a variety of films they might otherwise never see. Here’s a list to some of the world’s international film festivals.
- Berlin Film Festival – Berlin, Germany. The Berlinale is the largest film festival in the world. Showcasing up to 400 films a year, its highest awards are the Golden and Silver Bears.
- Tribeca Film Festival – New York, United States. The Tribeca Film Festival was first held in 2003 after 9/11 to stimulate New York’s economy. It focuses on helping filmmakers reach a broader audience.
- Los Angeles Film Festival – Los Angeles, California. The LA Film Festival showcases 200 films from all over the world across 10 days.
- Adelaide Film Festival – Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. The Adelaide Film Festival is focused on supporting films. It has established an annual $500,000 fund for investment in films.
- Melbourne Film Festival – Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The Melbourne Film Festival hosts films from over 50 countries over 17 days every winter. It has an annual admittance of over 400,000 people.
- Sundance Festival 2010 –Park City, Utah. The Sundance Film Festival is America's largest independent Film Festival, and the event which brought attention to many famous films like "Reservoir Dogs" and "Napoleon Dynamite".
- Giffoni International Film Festival – Giffoni Valle Piana, Italy. The Giffoni International Film Festival is the largest festival in Europe that focuses on children’s films.
- Telluride Film Festival – Telluride, Colorado. Held on Labor Day weekend, the Telluride Film Festival lasts for four days.
- Toronto International Film Festival – Toronto, Canada. One of the world’s most prestigious Film Festivals, the Toronto International Film Festival is held in September, hosting 400-500 films from all over the world including countries like Africa, South America and Asia. “Slumdog Millionaire” was launched at this festival.
- Santa Barbara International Film Festival – Santa Barbara, California. A non-profit Film Festival, the Santa Barbara Film Festival showcases independent films as well as international films. There are usually around 30 films showcased over an 11-day period.
- Human Rights Watch International Film Festival – Brixton, England. Part of the Human Rights Watch organization, this Film Festival showcases films that focus on stories of activism or stories of survival from the world’s oppressed.
- Cannes Film Festival – Cannes, South France. One of the world’s oldest and most prestigious film festivals, the Cannes Film Festival hosts films from all over the world and many directors choose to showcase their films here before anywhere else. The world’s most famous movie stars gather here at tables adorned with eiffel tower vases and ostrich feathers.
- Newport Beach Film Festival – Newport Beach, California. The Newport Beach Film Festival showcases more than 350 films and attracts more than 30,000 attendees a year.
- Sarasota Film Festival – Sarasota, Florida. The Sarasota Film Festival was founded in 1998 and it’s the 4th largest independent film festival in the United States.
- Nantucket Film Festival – Nantucket, Massachusetts. This smaller film festival is conducted in an effort to promote cultural awareness and appreciation of screenwriting as opposed to just filmmaking.
- Miami International Film Festival – Miami, Florida. The Miami International Film Festival, held sometime in late winter every year, was founded over 25 years ago.
- Santa Fe Film Festival – Santa Fe, New Mexico. A non-profit festival, the Santa Fe Film Festival provides a good environment for film makers wanting to showcase smaller independent films.
- Boston Film Festival – Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1985, the Boston Film Festival has launched such films as “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and “North Country.”
- Ann Arbor Film Festival – Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Ann Arbor Film Festival is the 2nd oldest festival in the country, showcasing both independent and experimental films.
- Pune International Film Festival – Pune, India. Launched in 2002, the Pune International Film Festival was started to create a nerve center in Pune for the film industry.
- Jeonju International Film Festival – Jeuonju, South Korea. The Jeonju International Film Festival was founded in 2009. It showcases digital, independent, and art films from all over the world.
- Locarno Film Festival – Locarno, Switzerland. The Locarno International Film Festival was begun in 1946. Its top prize is a Golden Leopard and the festival usually attracts over 8,000 people a year.
- Moondance International Film Festival – Boulder, Colorado. The Moondance International Film Festival is a unique festival designed to promote women in the field of entertainment. The focus remains on women screenwriters, short-story writers, playwrights and independent filmmakers.
- Venice Film Festival – Venice, Italy. Founded in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest Film Festival in the world. The highest prize is the Golden Lion.
- Vietnamese International Film Festival – University of California, Irvine. The Vietnamese International Film Festival a special place for film makers of Vietnamese heritage to showcase their work.
- Belize International Film Festival – Belize City, Belize. The Belize International Film Festival was founded in 2003. Unlike other festivals, this one focuses on films made by Central American and Caribbean filmmakers.
- Seattle International Film Festival – Seattle, Washington. The largest Film Festival in North America, the SIFF runs for 24 straight days, usually showcasing more than 300 films.
- Gasparilla Film Festival – Tampa Bay, Florida. The Gasparilla Film Festival is Tampa Bay’s largest independent Film Festival and it’s operated by the Tampa Film Institute. It is dedicated to advancing film education as well as supporting filmmakers.
- Canada International Film Festival – Vancouver, Canada. The Canada International Film Festival is one of Canada’s most popular Film Festivals. It showcases films and short documentaries from countries all over the world.
- Charleston International Film Festival – Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston International Film Festival, established in 2007, works to bring people together through the art of film. It hosts international films as well as documentaries.
