Ostrich Feathers - The Difference Between a Plume and a Drab
When choosing ostrich feathers for your centerpieces, it is important to first educate yourself on the types of feathers available so that you make a wise purchase. There is a big difference in the quality and type of feathers available on the market.Ostrich Plumes: Ostrich wing plumes are the largest and fullest looking feathers. Plumes have thick quills and beautiful hanging tips for the most elegant effect. We carry these in 18-22" sizes. One pound of plumes will contain approximately 100 feathers. Ostrich plumes are recommended for very plush and full looking centerpieces.
Ostrich Drabs: Ostrich drabs can be used as a excellent alternative to plumes for decorators who are on a budget. However, buyer beware, there is a huge difference in the quality from company to company. We sell only first quality drabs, while many other companies sell lower quality seconds. Our drabs are 12-16" in size. One pound of drabs will contain approximately 250 feathers. While drabs are less expensive, they can be stunning when used in centerpieces as long as they are high quality.
Before buying ostrich feathers, make sure to ask your vendor the following questions:
1. Am I buying plumes or drabs?
2. Are your feathers first quality or seconds?
3. Are your feathers hand sorted and steamed?
